CIMC Sanctum’s Large-Capacity LNG Cryogenic Storage Tanks Receive High Praise from U.S. Customers

24 Sep,2020

On August 2, Mr. Jeffery Nelson, Project Manager at U.S. client NFE Corporation, posted on LinkedIn that three custom-built 350 m³ (92,000 gal) LNG horizontal tanks manufactured by CIMC Enric have arrived on the Baja California Peninsula, marking the island’s first-ever LNG storage tanks. Mr. Nelson highly praised the tanks for being precisely fabricated in full accordance with the design specifications, for completing production ahead of schedule, and for being expertly packaged for shipment. He also urged industry peers to contact CIMC Enric to procure additional LNG equipment.
On September 15, 2018, CIMC Enric USA placed an order with Sanctum for three 350 m³ horizontal LNG storage tanks. This trust and support from the customer have been a tremendous source of encouragement for the entire Sanctum team!
Just as everyone was gearing up to roll up their sleeves and get to work, the biggest challenge facing them was: “How do we do it?” Although Sanctum specializes in manufacturing various types of cryogenic storage tanks, this was the first time the company had applied cold-drawing technology to a tank of such enormous scale, leaving no established processes to draw upon. This undoubtedly posed a formidable challenge. To deliver a solution that would fully satisfy the client, Sanctum assigned the project to its “Shell Project Team”—a group renowned for tackling tough, high-stakes projects—to oversee and manage the entire undertaking.
In just over five months, three storage tanks were successfully completed—more than two months ahead of the contracted delivery schedule. Behind this achievement are round-the-clock engineering design work, countless rounds of meticulous review and refinement of technical solutions, relentless progress monitoring, nonstop on-site construction by workers, creative staffing adjustments to address manpower shortages during holidays, and, above all, a profound sense of responsibility toward our client.
Just as everyone was basking in the joy of a successful completion, they received notice that the client’s project had been delayed, requiring Sunda to help find a temporary storage site. With such large storage tanks, even lifting and transporting them is a challenge; moreover, the factory premises are limited in space, so storing the tanks on-site would block access for other production operations, while placing them offsite would expose them to wind, sun, and rain. Yet this new hurdle did not daunt the Sunda team. To meet the client’s needs, Sunda engaged in repeated negotiations with the freight forwarder and ultimately succeeded in transporting the three tanks safely to the port and arranging their secure storage. Although the tanks were placed outdoors at the port and inevitably subject to weathering, quality inspection, together with personnel from production and other departments, made regular visits to the port to inspect the tanks and promptly replace their protective packaging, thereby preventing any damage. Over the past year and more, the company’s representatives have made frequent trips to the port. After more than 400 days of anxious anticipation, NFE finally picked up the three tanks on June 11, 2020.
With this, the NFE project has been successfully concluded. Yet the road ahead for Sanctum is still long, and many more “NFE projects” await us to break new ground and deliver on schedule in strict accordance with the contract. On this journey ahead, the Sanctum team will continue to uphold the spirit of the NFE project—embracing innovation, striving with determination, facing challenges head-on, and pressing forward with unwavering resolve—to consistently create new milestones of excellence for CIMC Enric!
