CIMC Sanctum Delivers China’s Largest LNG Double-Hull Marine Fuel Tank

Recently, Zhangjiagang CIMC Sanctum Cryogenic Equipment Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of CIMC Enric, (hereinafter referred to as “CIMC Sanctum”), successfully shipped two 500-cubic-meter double-walled marine fuel tanks for LNG (liquefied natural gas). According to reports, this is currently the largest-capacity double-walled marine fuel tank project ever delivered in China.
According to available information, the double-walled marine fuel tank—also known as a vacuum-insulated fuel tank—is an LNG vacuum-insulated storage tank that meets the IMO Type C tank requirements within a ship’s LNG fuel supply system and serves as one of the core components of the LNG fuel system. In 2019, CIMC Sundaing entered into a contract with MAN ES, a globally renowned provider of powertrain solutions based in Sweden, for the supply of four 500-cubic-meter double-walled marine LNG fuel tanks. This delivery comprises two of those tanks.
“Following the successive delivery of the four marine fuel tanks manufactured by CIMC Sanctum to MAN ES, they will be fully integrated into MAN ES’s LNG-fueled propulsion system. This system will power a luxury ro-ro passenger vessel owned by a German company, featuring 5,015 lane meters and 866 passenger berths. Powered by LNG, the vessel will achieve a 22% reduction in CO2 emissions, a 98% reduction in sulfur oxide emissions, and an 82% reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions under equivalent operating conditions, making it a quintessential example of a new-generation, safe, comfortable, green, and environmentally friendly ro-ro passenger ship.” According to Liu Zhong, Senior Director of Marketing at CIMC Sanctum’s Marketing Center, the double-walled marine fuel tanks designed and developed by CIMC Sanctum will play a crucial role in this process.
Liu Zhong stated that MAN ES chose to partner with CIMC Sunda because it places the greatest emphasis on CIMC Sunda’s robust overall capabilities. “CIMC Sunda has many years of experience in the design and construction of marine fuel tanks and is a well-known brand in China’s marine fuel tank sector. To date, it has supplied more than 40 double-hull marine fuel tanks of various capacities for offshore vessel projects to numerous renowned shipyards worldwide, with product quality and operational performance earning the deep trust of customers around the globe.”
According to reports, the two 500-cubic-meter fuel tanks delivered this time presented significant construction challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. To address these challenges, CIMC Sanctum promptly developed tailored fabrication procedures and a comprehensive construction schedule based on the actual site conditions, while also conducting thorough pre-production planning. Throughout the manufacturing process, the project team maintained close communication and seamless coordination with DNV GL, MAN ES representatives stationed at the facility, and the shipowner’s on-site representatives, thereby effectively advancing the project and ensuring its successful final delivery.
According to the briefing, marine fuels release substantial amounts of sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter into the atmosphere during combustion, with adverse impacts on ecosystems and human health. Particularly in ports, straits, and other high-traffic maritime areas, ship emissions have even become the primary source of pollution in these regions. Against the backdrop of increasingly stringent environmental regulations, the trend toward lower-sulfur and lighter marine fuels is gaining momentum, and air pollution caused by ship exhaust is attracting growing global attention. The International Maritime Organization and governments worldwide have progressively implemented sulfur-limiting regulations, with clean-energy LNG emerging as the preferred fuel choice for ship operators around the globe.
Liu Zhong stated that, in addition to dual-layer marine fuel tanks, CIMC Sanctum, leveraging its many years of extensive experience in cryogenic products, has already successfully developed a wide range of LNG marine tanks, LNG transport tanks, and LNG bunkering systems spanning capacities from 3.5 m³ to 14,000 m³, and has signed strategic cooperation framework agreements with several internationally renowned power-system solution providers. “CIMC Sanctum will further enhance the competitiveness of its marine tank products in the global market, thereby supporting the development of green shipping worldwide.”
