In October 2019, CIMC Sundaing entered into a contract with German company TGE Marine to design and manufacture four 300 m³ marine fuel tanks for a 16,300-dwt dual-fuel chemical tanker series owned by a Swedish shipowner. Two of the tanks delivered this time will be installed on the seventh vessel in the series, while the remaining two, scheduled for delivery at the end of October, will be fitted on the eighth vessel. Notably, this marks the first time that TGE Marine has outsourced the fabrication of vacuum-insulated fuel tanks to a Chinese tank manufacturer.
According to Liu Zhong, Senior Director of Marketing at CIMC Sunda’s Marketing Center, TGE Marine, a global leader in marine and offshore cryogenic gas systems engineering contracting and a pioneer in the LNG floating storage and regasification industry, conducted more than two years of thorough due diligence and evaluation. During this process, TGE Marine highly recognized CIMC Sunda’s robust overall capabilities in the field of LNG marine equipment and ultimately selected CIMC Sunda as the integrated system supplier for its domestic vacuum tanker projects, collaborating to undertake the turnkey EPC contract for the project’s FGSS (Fuel Gas Supply System).
In fact, CIMC Sanctum’s extensive shipbuilding expertise and its products’ stable and reliable performance have long been recognized by Swedish shipowners. According to reports, in addition to Vessels No. 7 and No. 8 of the 16,300-dwt series of dual-fuel chemical tankers ordered by Swedish shipowners, all 12 300 m³ LNG marine fuel tanks installed on Vessels No. 1 through No. 6—already in service—were also designed and built by CIMC Sanctum.
“Although the system integration for the first six vessels in this series was contracted to different suppliers, Swedish shipowners consistently specify CIMC Sunda’s tank containers. Swedish shipowners particularly commend the build quality of CIMC Sunda’s tank containers, especially their ‘holding time’,” said Liu Zhong.
According to reports, “holding time” refers, in simple terms, to the duration during which LNG can be stored without loss in a ship tank—starting from the moment the tank is fully loaded with LNG and continuing until the safety relief valve trips and begins venting boil-off gas (BOG). The longer the holding time, the better the tank’s thermal insulation performance.
Liu Zhong stated that, in the second half of 2018, Swedish shipowners’ monitoring of the “pressure retention time” of the LNG bunkering tanks on Vessels No. 2 and No. 3 revealed that the total pressure retention time for both vessels exceeded 100 days—far surpassing the 15-day requirement stipulated in the International Code for the Safe Use of Gases or Other Low-Flash-Point Fuels in Ships (IGF Code).
To date, thanks to its superior product quality and robust overall capabilities, CIMC St. Davin has supplied more than 30 sets of marine fuel tanks in various capacities to internationally renowned companies such as Kongsberg Maritime, MAN Sweden, and Wärtsilä, thereby making a positive contribution to reducing ship exhaust emissions. “Currently, powering vessels with the clean energy LNG has become the primary choice for ship operators worldwide. As a well-known clean-energy equipment manufacturer, CIMC St. Davin will further enhance its market competitiveness, continue to deliver products that offer exceptional value for money, and support the global development of green shipping,” said a CIMC St. Davin executive.
