A Brief Discussion by an LNG Filling Station Equipment Manufacturer on the Use of LNG Storage Tanks

23 Dec,2020

The term “LNG refueling station equipment” is familiar to many people, and quite a few are very well acquainted with it. Especially nowadays, as we strive to better adapt to our fast-paced lifestyle, numerous households have purchased cars to make travel more convenient. We rely on our vehicles every day for commuting to and from work. LNG CNG Station Equipment Manufacturer Having said that, it is clear that we frequently interact with LNG refueling stations. Next, we will focus on LNG storage tanks.

  LNG storage tank
Function: Used for LNG liquid storage.
Appearance: Vertical storage tank, horizontal storage tank
Thermal insulation materials: vacuum powder (Zhuguang sand); wrap-around type (glass fiber)
  Daily evaporation rate: <0.3%
Maximum design working pressure: 1.2 MPa
Safety valve opening pressure: 1.25 MPa
  Withstand Pressure: <1.6 MPa
  Planned temperature: -196°C
  Operating temperature: -162°C
The manufacturer of LNG fueling station equipment outlines the precautions for operating storage tanks:
  1. For storage tanks equipped with dual root valves, the valve located closest to the tank shall be kept normally open.
  2. During unloading, the maximum filling level for storage tanks should not exceed 90% of the effective volume (as specified by the manufacturer as 85%–95% of the geometric volume), with a minimum residual capacity of no less than 10%.
  3. High tank pressure does not necessarily indicate a problem with the tank itself; other factors, such as heat leakage throughout the system and the duration of liquid storage, should also be considered. Generally, pressure relief should be initiated when it exceeds 1.1 MPa. LNG fueling station equipment manufacturers advise that prolonged operation at high pressure can shorten the service life of the tank’s vacuum insulation.
  4. If a storage tank exhibits extensive, prolonged sweating or frosting and the pressure continues to rise rapidly, vacuum failure should be suspected. Immediate action must be taken to manually relieve the pressure and transfer the LNG liquid from the tank.
  5. It is recommended that vacuum tests be conducted on storage tanks every other year. For hot tanks, the vacuum level must be less than 1 Pa; for cold tanks, the vacuum level must be less than 0.5 Pa (0.00375 TOF) to be considered compliant.
  6. Storage tanks shall not be transported with liquid inside; when the tank is out of service for an extended period, the LNG liquid in the tank shall be drained.
  7. Storage tanks are pressure vessel equipment. In accordance with the “Safety Supervision Regulations for Pressure Vessels” promulgated and implemented by the People’s Republic of China, any installation, repair, or modification of pressure vessels must be reported to the local quality inspection authority by a qualified entity and may only proceed upon obtaining approval.
Based on the foregoing analysis, it is LNG CNG Station Equipment Manufacturer —An analysis by CIMC Sanctum Cryogenic Equipment of operational considerations related to LNG storage tanks.
