Multi-layer insulation is essential in cryogenic liquid transport vehicles.

Multi-layer insulation, an essential component of cryogenic liquid transport vehicles.
Cryogenic Liquid Transport Vehicle It consists of two main components: the tank body and the semi-trailer chassis. The tank body itself is composed of an inner cylinder, an outer cylinder, and an insulation layer. There is more than one method for insulating the tank of a cryogenic liquid transport vehicle; however, based on its own experience, CIMC Sanctum, a manufacturer of such vehicles, would like to emphasize that vacuum multi-layer insulation is indispensable.
A wide variety of products; low-temperature insulation technology
The low-temperature insulation technology employed on tank vessels is primarily aimed at minimizing heat loss from cryogenic equipment through convection, conduction, and radiation. The insulation methods used for cryogenic liquid transport tankers are not limited to a single approach; rather, they vary depending on the physical properties of the liquefied gas being stored and the specific operational requirements.
Low-temperature insulation technologies encompass a variety of approaches, including high-vacuum multilayer insulation, vacuum-powder and fiber insulation, and packed-bed insulation. Among cryogenic liquids, liquefied natural gas (LNG) is the most common; its primary component is liquefied methane. A widely used insulation method for LNG storage and transport—such as the semi-trailer trucks we often see—is high-vacuum multilayer insulation.
Worry-free storage and transportation with high-vacuum multilayer insulation.
A cryogenic liquid transport vehicle consists of a tank and a semi-trailer chassis, with the tank comprising an inner liner, an outer shell, and an insulation layer. The tank employs high-vacuum multilayer insulation technology, in which a high-performance multilayer insulation layer—composed of multiple layers of aluminum foil and glass-fiber paper—is wrapped around the inner surface of the inner liner. The number of aluminum foil layers directly affects the thermal insulation performance of the multilayer insulation.
High-vacuum multilayer insulation, in simple terms, involves placing numerous radiation shields within a vacuum interlayer. The space between the inner and outer cylinders constitutes the interlayer region, which is subjected to high-vacuum treatment to reduce radiative heat transfer. The effectiveness of this insulation depends on factors such as the materials used, the degree of vacuum, the density and number of layers, and the boundary temperatures.
The advantages of high-vacuum multilayer insulation are its excellent thermal insulation performance and the narrow gap between the insulation layers; under the same conditions, the inner container’s volume is larger than that of a vacuum-powder transport vehicle. In addition, adopting high-vacuum multilayer insulation can reduce the overall vehicle mass, resulting in a lighter curb weight and lower pre-cooling losses compared with vacuum-powder insulation. Moreover, it offers better stability, as the insulation layer is less prone to settling.
The drawbacks include a relatively complex manufacturing process, high cost per unit volume, extremely stringent requirements for vacuum levels—making it difficult to achieve and maintain a high degree of vacuum—and significant heat conduction in the parallel direction.
